About
Coming soon! We have 20 more prototype modules on the way. The first 10 are all sold out. A mass production run will happen after we finish driver integration for the sensor.
This module is only compatible with the OpenMV N6.
The LiDAR Camera Module allows your OpenMV Cam to interface with the VL53L9CX dToF sensor and the PAG7936 1MP 120 FPS Color Global Shutter sensor simultaneously. Now you can process distance images with color mixed in! The PAG7936 exposure trigger is shared with the VL53L9CX timestamp input, allowing you to synchronize depth information with image capture.
The STMicroelectronics VL53L9CX camera module brings true 3D direct time-of-flight depth sensing to the OpenMV Cam platform.
Unlike stereo vision, which infers depth by matching features between two cameras, dToF measures distance directly, timing how long individual photons take to return from the scene. Depth comes out calibration-free, in real metric units, with no dependence on scene texture or ambient light.
- High-resolution – market-leading 2.3K zones (up to 54 x 42) with binning, for genuine 3D scene structure rather than a handful of ranging points. With bicubic upscaling, a 216x168 output resolution is possible without significant blurring.
- Long-range – accurate ranging from <5 cm to 9 m, covering both close proximity and full-room distances.
- High-speed – streams full-resolution processed data at up to 100 Hz, using a dual-scan flood illumination strategy that benefits SLAM, obstacle avoidance, and small object detection.
- Works in the dark – two 940 nm VCSELs provide invisible flood illumination, so depth is unaffected by ambient lighting, textureless walls, or glossy surfaces that defeat stereo matching.
- Low-power – only 150 mW typical system power, and no host compute spent on stereo disparity matching, leaving your N6's NPU budget for inference.
- Rich output – depth, 2D IR with and without active illumination, reflectance, and confidence maps, all processed on-sensor and completely calibration-free.
- Wide field of view – 55° x 42° (71° diagonal) through metasurface optical elements, in an all-in-one module measuring just 12.8 x 6.1 x 4.6 mm.
Applications
As dToF sensors measure absolute distance directly, they are uniquely positioned to capture scene geometry regardless of lighting or surface texture, for example:
- Obstacle avoidance & SLAM for mobile robots
- People counting, occupancy & fall detection
- Volume, dimension & fill-level measurement
Combining the LiDAR with color imaging allows you to easily integrate vision-based ML models with the depth data, turning a 2D bounding box into a real-world position and size in meters.
